Docking Station Not Detecting External Monitors – Microsoft Community

This is getting ridiculous now, we have 4 Surface Pro 4 devices and 1 Surface Book with official Microsoft docks. The docks work fine when no monitors are added. As soon as either 1 or 2 displays are introduced, the Surface’s screen will flicker like mad constantly, i get no output on the external monitors. This is happening to the point where the screen is flickering multiple times a second, it never settles down and impossible to read anything on screen.

Renders the machine completely useless until the display is removed from the dock. So, onto troubleshooting then The docks tested have been with original firmware supplied, and also the latest firmware downloaded on them with no difference. The machines themselves are a mixture of Windows 10 pro and All windows updates are up-to-date.

So this tells me there is something wrong with the machines themselves. From my point of view, all machines have been given the same image, same updates, i cannot find a common denominator between the devices that do work and those that dont. Furthermore, on devices where it has been failing, if they are re-imaged with the same image that i know works on other identical hardware and it still fails before any additional updates etc are applied which leads me to think perhaps this is a hardware error?

I cannot say for certain they were shipped to us like this since most users only had a dock given to them at a later date. Interested to hear what others think and how to resolve.

I think would I would do, is take one of the problem Pro 4’s and restore it to factory, without your image. Then plug it in and see if you have the same problems. I have had some odd problems with my Surface Pro 4 from time to time with the Microsoft dock and 2 external monitors, where I go to turn on my SP4 and nothing displays on my monitors, I then open up my SP4 and the display is on there, so I shut it down and wait a few seconds then close it back up and hit the power button and then everything is working on my monitors.

Happens to me about once every 2 weeks. Have you updated the dock firmware? That solved a lot of my issues. Additionally, make sure you are using Active mDP cables. Microsoft didn’t advertise this in the beginning, but they used to require the active adapters.

Then they released a firmware update that supposedly allowed for passive adapters, but I find the active ones still work better. Did you buy the original MS Display port adapter cables? We had a similar issue but with OEM cable adapters we found online which were cheaper – to combat the issue we replaced them with genuine MS ones and the issue was gone. I have faced similar issues with Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book.

I have fixed these issues the following ways:. Rotating the Surface Dock Adapter the opposite direction. No, if a monitor is connected directly, it works fine. Unfortunately a dock is required for 2 external. I cannot see anything in the description that mentions these to be ‘active’ or not. Are these not suitable? If not, i shall look into purchasing ‘active’ ones, but if this is the cause, weird how half of my devices work fine with them?

Can someone supply a link to the correct cables to use please? Believe it or not i swapped the orientation of the adapter and it began to work!!! I have not tried updating the BIOS, or even looking to see if there is a newer version.

I will look into this. Brand Representative for Microsoft. That’s what my SP4 does. I take it out of my bag, set it down next to my monitor and attach the docking cable I love that it is magnetic , hit the power button and everything is on my monitors. But like I said in my prior post, about once every two weeks, it goofs up, but opening my SP4 and turning it back off, then close it and turn it back in fixes it.
