Check the speed settings of the NIC. Try the laptop on another port and cable, and another device on the old port and cable. The switch port could be forcing it instead of auto negotiate. I would unplug another device on the network that is already running at 1gbps.
Use this network lead as a test for that laptop. If the connection still connects at mbps then the problem is with the laptop. You could try forcing the connection to run at 1gbps in the network drivers. If that doesn’t work you are looking at a warranty claim or investing in a usb to 1gbps Ethernet adapter.
Be suspicious of the cable, the port in the switch it is on and any cabling in the wall to the switch. Maybe the port is set for the low speed and not to auto negotiate. Note in particular other details like whether it is full or half-duplex. No, typically you can’t hard lock at anything higher than M. Gig speeds are auto negotiate. If it fails, you know the problem is isolated to the laptop, either the network card is problematic, or the drivers are. IF the test works and you get 1gig, THEN move the good cable and the laptop back to its original port and test again.
If it changes, you now know the problem is somewhere between the wall jack and the switch. Leave the laptop plugged into the same wall port, and change the connection at the switch. If the mbit connection changes to the new switch port, the problem is in the walls.
Check your terminations. If it doesn’t change ports, then the problem is the switch port. It’s highly unlikely, but switch ports CAN go bad. Notice how I’m only changing ONE aspect of the connection chain at a time? The problem with troubleshooting networking equipment is that people tend to change too many things at once, without -knowing- what is good or not, and assuming they have the answer until it has the same problem again later.

At a minimum you have four or five places where a connection can go bad between the laptop and the switch.
There’s the NIC itself. There’s the jack in the laptop that connects to the NIC. There’s the cable from the NIC to the wallplate. THere’s the jack in the wallplate. There’s the cabling behind the wall. There’s probably a patch panel in the switch closet, and another cable from the panel to the switch. The patch panel and the switch each have jacks as well.
