I reinstalled a Windows 7 Laptop Dell Latitude E , but upon reinstalling i found that the touchpad didnt work, which was annoying. I have scoured the internet looking for drivers, but i cant find them anywhere. There are several drivers that look like they might work, but when i go to install them the files extract, but then the installation errors and it just brings up the greyed out restart or close program box.

Restarting it just causes a loop so the only thing left is to stop it. If i try and click on the only unknown device in device manager and update the driver manually from there. It goes though the installing software stage, but errors with ‘Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device. Windows found driver software but encountered an error while attempting to install.

The system cannot read from the specified device. Im abit stumped to be honest, i’ve tried everything i can think of. Tried so many different drivers. Even tried updating the BIOS to a later version as a shot in the dark but still nothing.

There is nothing in device manager for the touchpad. All i can see that may be the touchpad is an unknown device listed under Other devices, then when i go to tell windows to search in a specific folder that’s when i get the error mentioned above.

Also, have you verified that this “Unknown Device” is truly the touchpad? I install Dell systems daily, and usually the Unknown device is the Accelerometer. This will tell you what drivers you need. And you are positive that you cannot install driver 7. Sometimes the Dell driver search gets wonky if you search based off Service Tag.

Back out and drill down by device. You may find other options, like, perhaps this one. Unless the pcidatabase says the unlisted device is truly your touchpad my guess would be that it is actually the accelerometer like david says. Check your installed devices, and make sure it wasn’t improperly installed with some other generic driver, also check your bios and make sure there isn’t a setting there. You didn’t specify whether you were installing 32, or 64bit. However, unless the part has been swapped out you will need the ALPS driver.

Don’t be afraid to use the vista driver, or even go a version or two back. I had this problem before with a dell latitude. I used an all in one CD that the institution provided us. And i cant right click the unknown device because the mouse doesnt work lol! Now this won’t start the mouse but could be the unknown device. Has the touchpad software been installed? If so can you check and it see if the checkbox to disable the touchpad has been enabled? Long shot I know?

Could it be that there is a switch on the touchpad to turn it off? On mine its at the top of the touchpad. There is nothing in the BIOS that says the touchpad is disabled. Theres also no touchpad software that says anything about the touchpad being enabled or disabled. Is there anything listed for the Touchpad? All i did was reinstall the laptop, and it worked. I didnt think reinstalling it would do anything because it of the issue, but just reinstalling it has done it.

Maybe it was something to do with me upgrading the BIOS from A04 to A10 during my initial troubleshooting, but i have just reinstalled it and now it is working. It certainly sounds like you are missing the driver for the touchpad. I would be tempted to try the synaptics drivers. Has this machine been apart? Could the ribbon cable have some loose or not been put back correctly?
