While neither could be said to be the true inventors of one-on-one fighters, both have certainly been involved in the refining of the genre, with each creating many innovations in the many years: from super bars, rolling and various types of cancels. A strong rivalry has helped to encourage the two toward these improvements and has also helped to infuse a sense of humour and a determination to better the other.

For a brief period, both companies came to a licensing deal to allow either company to utilise characters from the other, creating games which celebrated the franchises of both companies and the genre with games that gathered some of the most iconic characters in video game history. Capcom Vs. SNK, the first game in this agreement, was determined as a success and so Capcom coded the sequel. Even if some of the ports were years apart.

The analogue control stick is too imprecise for the needs of a game which require precise rotations to operate properly. The D-pad itself, being digital, is more suited to the genre, but its small size and position on the pad can make control somewhat awkward, though with practice it does work and is the best option. This generally involves moving the stick to a certain direction to perform a certain move, forward for fireballs, up for dragon punches etc.

Unfortunately, its use in game can degrade battles into what amounts to little move than special move fests with little to no skill needed, which defeats the whole object of a genre which emphasises precise control. However those prepared to use the controls as intended, or can get their hands a more suited controller, will find a game with a great deal of depth and a generally good collection of characters.

However some of the characters included here, are nothing more than clones of others, particularly those of the shotos that make up a multiple section of the character rooster. Some of the alterations to the characters are hard to comprehend, while the boss character like Shin Akuma are immensely overpowered, other characters have lost their edge. For instance two characters: Sakura and Yuri, who previously had chargeable fireballs, no longer have them. Character missing their trademark moves, or having said trademark moves changed in a way that forces you to relearn a character, it is a bitter pill.

Of course many of the move changes is to bring the SNK characters into the Capcom way of thinking, as the game does lean heavily on the Capcom style of play, with a six button layout, air-blocking gauges, it is hardly surprising that the SNK characters would be affected by these changes. None seem to be just a second thought in the game, taken as they are from the history of both companies worlds. C-groove is the standard three-tier super bar, and the most versatile in terms of it ease of use from beginning to expert.

Its versatile nature is some ways does play against it, as it can be predictable and while it has no glaring weakness, it has little in the way of definite advantage over the others. A-groove is, of course the somewhat infamous custom combo system from the Alpha games; infamous because in the hands of a high-end veteran, it can be used to devastating effect, to the point when it could be consider a broken system in some eyes.

All the grooves have plenty to recommend each of them, with none having a huge advantage over the others. The higher resolution of both of these only helps to show up the problems with the lower-resolution of the character sprites in comparison.

With games like the Guilty-Gear series, a game with both hi-res sprites and backgrounds, this has become less justifiable. However, this hog posh of conflicting sprite detail, although quite annoying, is not wholly detrimental to the game as a whole.

The spot effects are mostly the usually collection of punch and kick sounds that both companies have been using for years and are, as usual, solid and competent. The narrator is as annoying as ever, with his grating overt enthusiasm becoming all to quickly generic and boring. The music consists of remixes of old tunes and some new if uninspired stage music. The remixed classic tunes are much more competent, and claws back some of the dignity of the musical heritage of the two companies.
